1. Understand Roblox UGC Guidelines
Before starting, familiarize yourself with Roblox’s UGC submission requirements:
- Polygon Count: Keep the model low-poly, typically under 1,000 polygons for hats and accessories.
- Texture Size: Use a single 256×256 texture for optimal performance.
- File Format: Export your model in
.fbx
format. - Size and Scale: Ensure the model fits appropriately on the Roblox avatar.
2. Plan Your Design
- Sketch or brainstorm your idea for the UGC item (e.g., hats, accessories, gear).
- Decide on the theme and how it complements Roblox’s existing style.
3. Model in Blender
- Use a Base Avatar Reference: Download a Roblox avatar rig to ensure your model fits properly. You can get a reference rig from the Roblox Developer Hub or create one using the default character dimensions.
- Keep It Low Poly: Focus on clean topology and reduce unnecessary details.
- Mirror and Symmetry: Use Blender’s symmetry tools to speed up modeling symmetrical objects.
4. UV Unwrap and Texture
- Efficient UV Mapping: Layout UVs efficiently to maximize the 256×256 texture space.
- Texture Design: Use tools like Photoshop, GIMP, or Blender’s texture paint mode to create textures. Ensure textures align with Roblox’s style—vivid and colorful, but simple.
5. Rigging and Weight Painting (If Needed)
- For items like hair or dynamic accessories, rig them to the avatar rig for proper animation compatibility in Roblox.
6. Export and Test in Roblox Studio
- Export the model as an
.fbx
file. - Import it into Roblox Studio using the Asset Manager:
- Open Roblox Studio.
- Go to the View tab and enable Asset Manager.
- Upload your
.fbx
file and apply materials/textures.
- Test the item on different avatar types to ensure proper fit and function.
7. Submit for Approval (If Eligible)
- If you’re part of the Roblox UGC program, submit your item for review through the UGC portal.
- If you’re not yet a UGC creator, focus on building a portfolio to apply to the UGC program.
